Sardinia in general

What is the idea behind going on vacation to Sardinia? Is it the beach? Is it the good water quality? Is it the short distance to Germany? Or is it the attractive price for the ticket?
Maybe it is all of these points. Especially flight is quite cheap, but in total to spend your vacation on Sardinia is not cheap. Because the cost for a room or apartment and the total cost of living is quite high. It’s an island and almost everything needs to be brought from the mainland.
We really found Sardinia in a search engine for cheap tickets and together with all the other mentioned aspects we decided to go there.

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea behind Sicily. It is located between Italy, France, Catalonia und Tunisia and really all of these guys have been there in history and ruled the island. They left back a very diversified cuisine, which we enjoyed much (maybe too much).
Finally in history Sardinia became part of Italy, but they neglected the island for a long time. In 1952 it became an autonomous province of Italy, but there have been revolts until the 1980s. Again and again Sardinia was famous for the kidnapping of celebrities or rich people. Today it’s not more dangerous than in other parts of Italy.

The first touristic highlight was set in the 1960s by the Aga Khan. He bought some land on the north-eastern corner of the island and built a holiday residence. Nowadays nearly the complete area, called Costa Smeralda, is owned by the Aga Khan. He established a quite restrictive building code. Today the Costa Smeralda is an attractive holiday area for mainly rich Italians, who are able to afford the high costs there.
A booming kind of holiday is the Agriturismo. These are originally farms, but nowadays they let some rooms or apartments. We decided for such an Agriturismo.
